Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, within Long Beach California. DuVernay lived with her Aunt Denise and her mother, who pushed DuVernay to become creative and attracted by the arts. Her aunt was a nurse who worked shifts at night so that she could commit all daytime hours to reading, art, theater and other interests. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her that art was a vehicle for activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was well-educated and encouraged the importance of speaking up through art. Although DuVernay was raised in Compton and with her extended family, she spent every summer living in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. Her father was awed by the famous civil rights protest across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the close-by town Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma inspired her to produce a film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. Following graduation, she went to the University of California Los Angeles where she received certificates in English and African American studies. When she was still a student DuVernay was interested in creating in the broadcast media. Her first job was working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked investigate the waste in the house of a member of the jury. She was disappointed by the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to move into the public relations industry. DuVernay started her career as a junior assistant to publicity at a tiny film studio shortly after she graduated from college. She launched in 1999 her own private company for public relations, dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, her agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
